1. Legislation: Legislation dealing with the use of languages

The Constitution of the Republic of Algeria, revised and approved by Referendum on November 28, 1996

The Algerian Arabisation Law (January 16, 1991), was amended on December 21, 1996; specifically Articles 11, 12, 18, 23, 32, and 36.

The law requires that Arabic be the official language and requires, under penalty of fines, that all official government business be conducted in Arabic. The law also requires that Arabic be used in all broadcasts of national television and radio for dubbing or subtitling all non-Arabic films, as well as for medical prescriptions and communications equipment.

Updated (April 2002)

On March 12, 2002 the Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced a constitutional amendment according to which the Tamazight language will be, along with Arabic, an official language in the country.

Tamazight, the language of the Berber population, is spoken by 9 million Algerian citizens (out of 30), mainly in the region of Kabyle. Throughout the last decades claims have been made from Berber region for a major respect and recognition of their culture.
