Miscellaneous: What else can be found about languages and minorities?When, in the early 1990's, the President Akayev's government practiced an aggressive policy to introduce the Kyrgyz as the official language, a Russian member of his staff created a public scandal by threatening to resign to dramatize the pressure for "Kyrgyzification" of the population. Updated (February 2004) THE KYRGYZ PRESIDENT PROMISES MORE ATTENTION TO THE UZBEK LANGUAGE At the meeting with representatives of the Uzbek community from southern Kyrgyzstan on January 23 the Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev promised that the Uzbek language and culture as well as languages and cultures of other nationalities living in the country will be given greater significance in the future. Akaev pointed out that interethnic harmony is important for the country's economic development. On January 26 Akaev met also with representatives of the Tajik minority from Batken District to discuss functioning of the Tajik Cultural Center.
