Law of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic On the Status of the State Language of the Moldavian SSR

(Adopted on August 31, 1989)

For the purpose of removing deformations in the language construction in the Moldavian SSR, of state protection of the Moldavian language which is one of the basic prerequisites for the existence of the Moldavian nation within its sovereign ethnic and state formation, for the assurance of its overall functioning on the territory of the Moldavian SSR and regulation of ethnic and language relations in the Republic, the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic decrees:

To supplement the Constitution (Basic Law) of the Moldavian SSR by Article 70 of the following contents:

Article 70

The Moldavian language shall be a state language of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. The state language shall be applied in political, economic, social and cultural life and shall be based on the Latin script.

The Moldavian SSR shall ensure the protection and development of the language of the Gagauz people residing primarily on the territory of the Republic.

The Moldavian SSR shall ensure on its territory the conditions for the development and application of the Russian language as a language of inter ethnic communication in the USSR, as well as languages of people belonging to other nationalities.

The procedure for the application of languages and their interaction with the state language of the Moldavian SSR shall be established by the legislation in force and the Law of the Moldavian SSR "On the Functioning of Languages on the Territory of the Moldavian SSR".
