Democracy or Babel?

In this book, Fernando de la Pena argues eloquently, from his own experience and in the words of many people newly arrived in this country, that new immigrants themselves realize as well as anyone the importance of mastering English. He explains the ways in which language isolation can do economic, political, and even cultural damage to immigrant groups in this country. In his words, “Linguistic equality-the knowledge that you can speak with and understand others around you-contributes to political and racial equality as well.”
