About U.S. English Foundation

Our Mission

The U.S.ENGLISH Foundation is a nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.-based 501 (c)(3) educational foundation that disseminates information on English teaching methods, sponsors educational programs, develops English instructional materials, represents the interests of Official English advocates before state and federal courts and promotes opportunities for people living in the United States to learn English.

Biography of U.S. English Founder, Senator S.I. Hayakawa

The lack of an assimilation policy for immigrants to the United States is rapidly changing the successful integration ways of the past. Gone are the days of the American Dream and the upwardly mobile society for immigrants. In its place are low expectations and government policies that encourage Americans to learn the language of the immigrants, instead of the other way around.

Chairman's Biography

Mauro E. Mujica has been Chairman of the Board and CEO of U.S.ENGLISH since January of 1993. Mr. Mujica, who himself immigrated to the United States from his native Chile, has a firsthand understanding of the obstacles facing non-English speakers upon their arrival in this country. His insight into the linguistic isolation of non-English speakers and his determination to help tear down these barriers made him a perfect successor to the late Senator S.I. Hayakawa, who founded the organization in 1983.
